A general contractor asked Ben to go out on a service call to a new client's home to resolve an electrical problem.
At the residence The homeowner opened the front door and Ben introduced himself as the electrician sent to troubleshoot the electrical problem. The homeowner announced that Ben was the 5th electrician to come out to try and solve this issue. "What makes you think --YOU can solve this?" the homeowner asked.
Ben replied with a smile "Pretend I am your personal Electrical Investigator and let me collect the clues that you provide and let me know what each of the other electricians tried to do." "OK" the homeowner replied. "But can I follow you around and ask questions as I observe how you do your work?" "Absolutely" Ben answered.
After discussion of the details on what the other electricians had done, Ben asked "Do you have an old hair dryer available ?"
"Sure!" answered the homeowner, "but what do you want that for?"
Ben answered with another question and asked if any of the other electricians did a LOAD test to see what happened by running a high power device on the circuit to personally observe what was happening under those conditions. "Well -- No, they didn't!" the homeowner stated surprised.
The other electricians had replaced the circuit breaker, replaced the GFCI receptacle, spent hours trying to locate the source of the problem by guessing at what MAY have caused the problem - but had not looked for a loose wire in a different location.
Within minutes of running the hair dryer and observing the power turning off - Ben identified the problem as a loose wire connection. Using his expertise and test equipment,Ben tracked the problem down and made the necessary repairs.
The homeowner was impressed after seeing how quick the evidence gathering and diagnostic revealed to Ben the source of the problem.
RESULT - Electrical problem resolved in less than 30 minutes.
